Poker Run for Trista Shoemaker fund
A motorcycle poker run will meet Saturday as a benefit to establish a memorial scholarship fund for Trista Shoemaker, who was killed in a traffic accident in January 2011. She was 17.
Registration is 10 a.m. at Derby Cycle and kickstands go up at noon. The cost is $10 per hand.
Sponsors will be welcomed for possible door prizes, a silent auction and 50/50 raffle. All proceeds go to the Trista Shoemaker Scholarship Fund at Western Hills High School.

Beshear appoints Frankfort residents

Gov. Steve Beshear has appointed a number of Frankfort residents to various boards and commissions, the governor’s office announced Friday.
Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney Dana Todd will serve on the Sex Offender Risk Assessment Advisory Board during the remainder of Beshear’s term, according to a press release.
Todd represents advocacy groups with a “demonstrated interest in the welfare of victims of sex offenders,” the release says.
Kevin Pangburn, director of mental health and substance abuse for the Kentucky Department of Corrections, will also serve on the Sex Offender Risk Assessment Advisory Board as an ex-officio representative of the Department of Corrections.
George Stokes, a self-employed Kentucky Blind Enterprises vendor, will serve a term on the Kentucky State Advisory Council on Libraries for a term expiring Dec. 17, 2015. He represents library users who are blind or physically handicapped, the release says.
William Adcock, an associate pastor and counselor at the Forks of Elkhorn Baptist Church in Midway, will serve on the Kentucky Board of Social Work until Dec. 21, 2016. Adcock represents certified social workers.
Kristel Smith, executive director of Eastern Kentucky University’s Innovation & Commercialization Center, will serve on the Governor’s Minority Employment, Business Affairs and Economic Development Council for a term expiring April 1, 2015.
Yvette Smith, executive director of the Kentucky Finance and Administration Cabinet, will also serve on the council until April 1, 2015.
Retiree Robert Stewart will chair of the Tourism Development Finance Authority until Jan. 31, 2016.
Free city garbage pickup this week
The free garbage pick up day for the summer quarter will be Monday through Friday on residents’ scheduled pick up day. During the week, residents can set out extra trash for collection from yards,
garages and basements in 32-gallon trash cans or bags not exceeding 50 pounds. The city-issued overflow bags will not be required.
Old household appliances, furniture and other items will be picked up, but tires, petroleum products and chemicals will not.
Residents can take electronic waste to the recycle facility on Rouse Avenue.

Indian Gap Road closed for bridge replacement
Indian Gap Road will be closed near the intersection of Camp Pleasant Road for a bridge replacement over Camp Pleasant Branch starting Monday, according to the Transportation Cabinet. Motorists can detour via Camp Pleasant Road and KY 1262, and work is scheduled for completion by Aug. 1.

Workshop focusing on genealogical blogging
At the next Kentucky Genealogical Society/Kentucky Historical Society Second Saturday family history workshop, two experienced genealogists/bloggers will demonstrate how to use blogs to connect with other researchers, share genealogical information, identify ancestors and find family stories.
“Welcome to the Blogosphere,” is set for Saturday at the Thomas D. Clark Center for Kentucky History and will feature two sessions. During the morning, presenters Cheri Daniels and Linda McCauley will provide an overview of genealogy blogs, the helpful community of bloggers and the dynamic information network bloggers have created.

Music camp set for Immanuel
Registration is now underway for the 17th annual Musical Day Camp Production at Immanuel Baptist Church, 1075 Collins Lane. The camp is for children who have competed grades 1-6.
The camp is scheduled for July 16-20, 9 a.m.-3 p.m. daily with performances of the production, “Never Give Up,” set for July 21 and 22. Camp participants are required to take part in the two productions.

Church celebrating Houston’s anniversary
First Baptist Church, 100 Clinton St., will host the Third Year Pastoral Anniversary for its senior pastor, Robert Earl Houston Sr. The celebration will take place Saturday and Sunday.
On Saturday at 6:30 p.m., there will be a concert by gospel recording artists The Golden Crowns. The group has been together for more than 50 years. Doors will open at 6. The concert is free and open to everyone. A love offering will be received during the concert for those who wish to contribute.

Commission work session Monday

Ky. Military History Museum closed starting July 28

The Kentucky Military History Museum at the State Arsenal will be closed after July 28 for its final phase of renovations.
The museum, a joint operation of the Kentucky Historical Society and Department of Military Affairs, is set to reopen in March 2013, according to a press release from KHS.
The State Arsenal, constructed in 1850, has undergone major renovations since 2007, and the final phase will include building a new entrance; adding old war records from before 1912; improving parking, stairs, sidewalks and accessibility of the building; upgrading visibility and safety; and new landscaping, the release says.
Once complete, restoration efforts will total more than $2 million. Earlier renovations included heating, ventilation and air conditioning upgrades; masonry repair; building a new staircase; installing a fire suppression system and restoring wood floors, according to the release.
John Milner Associates Inc. and lead architect Christopher Quirk have handled renovations, the release says.
The museum reopened on Veterans Day last year after interior renovations were finished. KHS’s “Kentucky Military Treasures” is currently on display, and the exhibit features artifacts and stories of Kentuckians who fought in wars spanning almost 200 years.
The Kentucky Military History Museum is open Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and visitors must check in at the Thomas D. Clark Center for Kentucky History, 100 W. Broadway.
Estate sale to benefit women’s shelter
An estate sale to benefit the Franklin County Women’s Shelter has started at 624 Shelby St. and will continue throughout July.
Women’s clothing, household items, tools, silver and glassware, wrought iron patio sets and framed artwork are among the items featured at the sale.
The estate sale will also be held noon-6 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays and 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturdays.

History tour with Walk/Bike Frankfort
Take a “magical history tour” with Walk/Bike Frankfort July 15 at 2 p.m. Participants should meet in the parking lot next to the Capital City Museum. The event is free and open to the public. All are encouraged to bring water bottles, helmets and sunscreen. The tour is a self-guided scavenger hunt in historic downtown Frankfort and can be completed on foot or by bicycle.
