Two Frankfort women were killed and one man critically injured Monday evening in a head-on crash on U.S. 127 in Owen County.
Lillie Newby, 73, and Patricia Gibson, 76, died after a pickup truck driven by 51-year-old Gary Sigretto, of Owenton, crossed the center line for unknown reasons and collided with their car, according to a news release by state police.
Brad Arterburn, spokesman for Kentucky State Police Post 5, told The State Journal the crash occurred near the intersection with Long Ridge-Sweet Owen Road, approximately 33 miles north of Frankfort.
Newby and Gibson were transported to New Horizons Medical Center in Owenton, where Owen County Coroner Lannis Garnett pronounced them dead. Garnett was not in the office to answer questions Tuesday morning.
Sigretto was airlifted to the University of Cincinnati Hospital with life-threatening injuries. Toxicology reports on Sigretto are pending and could take a few weeks or months to finish, Arterburn said.
Everyone in the crash was wearing a seatbelt. The State Journal is awaiting a report on Sigretto’s condition.
State troopers received a report of the crash at 5:17 p.m. and left the scene at about 8 p.m., Arterburn said.
State police is investigating the accident.
The Owen County Sheriff’s Department, Rescue Squad, EMS and Fire Department and Owenton, Monterey and New Liberty fire departments all assisted at the scene.
