WHHS Academic Team wins several awards
Western Hills High School took home several awards at the Commonwealth Academic League annual banquet Monday.
WHHS took first place overall in science, language arts and arts and humanities as well as first place in the tournament. WHHS took second place overall in social studies.
Several WHHS students also won individual awards.
In science, Andrew Bates took first place and Samantha Hensley took fourth place in science.
In language arts, Medora Jones took fourth and Hensley took fifth.
In social studies, Cam Newton took second place and Bates took third.
In arts and humanities, Bates took third and Newton took fourth.
Players, coaches and parents from WHHS, Sayre and Franklin, Anderson, Scott and Shelby counties were in attendance.
New named to Local School Board Member Advisory Council
Kentucky Education Commissioner Terry Holliday has announced the 10 board of education members who will serve on the Local School Board Member Advisory Council for the upcoming year.
Michelle New, chairwoman of the Franklin County Board of Education, will be an at-large member of the advisory council. Her term will expire Jan. 1, 2016.
Kentucky Department of Education staff reviewed applications before final selections were made. Several at-large members were elected by the Kentucky School Boards Association.
The council will meet four times during the calendar year. The first meeting of the Local School Board Member Advisory Council is Jan. 29 in Frankfort.
WATCH D.O.G.S. seeks volunteers
WATCH D.O.G.S., a father involvement and educational initiative of the National Center for Fathering, is seeking volunteers.
The program invites fathers, grandfathers, uncles, guardians and father figures of Franklin County High School to join in to provide positive male role models for students by demonstrating their presence that education is important and by providing a an extra set of eyes and ears to enhance security and reduce bullying.
Those interested in volunteering are invited to attend a Dads and Students Pizza Night 5 p.m. Thursday in the FCHS Media Center. RSVP to email@example.com.
