Lane closed for emergency bridge patching on I-64; delays expected

State Journal Staff Report, Published:

The right lane of westbound Interstate 64 at the bridge over Cardwell Lane will be closed for several hours for emergency patching, according to a spokeswoman for Kentucky Transportation Cabinet District 5.

Andrea Clifford said a hole was discovered in the concrete on the bridge near mile 51.5.

“Older bridges end up getting these,” she said. “It looks like a pothole.”

But rather than having cars driving over the hole and damaging it throughout the weekend, crews deemed the patch job an emergency.

“This one is apparently a good size,” she said. “Big enough that our crews feel like it needs to be patched today rather than wait, and there’s also all the rain.”

Clifford said the transportation cabinet does not recommend a detour unless the interstate is closed completely, but she said heavy delays should be expected.

The lane should be reopened by 4 p.m., she said.

Travelers hoping to avoid possible interstate traffic could bypass the construction by taking Exit 53 in Frankfort and traveling via U.S. 60.
