Arson suspected at local hair salon

Fire was extinguished by water heater

A local hair salon was saved from suspected arson by a nearby water heater.

Sheriff Pat Melton said the owner of Flobie’s Hair Salon on Jones Lane arrived at the building about 8:40 a.m. Thursday and called 911 when she discovered a strong smoke smell and hissing noise.

Deputies, firefighters and the Kentucky State Police arson investigator arrived on the scene and discovered the business had allegedly been burglarized — and a fire was set to cover up the crime, Melton added.

“We think they moved some equipment next to a water heater and set it on fire,” Melton said.

However, before any considerable damage was done the flames melted a water line, extinguishing the fire.

The salon, located in a converted house, sustained some smoke damage, the sheriff said. The house’s garage port suffered minor damage from flames.

The burglars are believed to have stolen a flat screen TV, an undisclosed amount of cash and some barber’s tools, Melton said. The incident remains under investigation by the sheriff’s office.
