Trial set April 11 for Joe Wall

State Journal Staff Report Published:

A jury trial date of April 11 has been set in Franklin District Court for criminal charges pending against a local furniture store owner accused of illegally detaining a Lexington TV reporter and cameraman inside his store.

The 36 On Your Side Watchdog Team from WTVQ claimed in September it was unlawfully imprisoned and threatened by Simon Furniture store owner Joe Wall and store manager Ali Shah over a consumer report the station was doing.

Wall, owner of Simon Furniture, was charged with menacing and criminal mischief and unlawful imprisonment.

According to court documents, WTVQ reporter Tom Kenny and Kevin Umberger said Wall knocked a microphone out of Kenny's hand while yelling and not allowing the men to leave the store.

WTVQ News Director David Foky said in an earlier interview that Kenny and Umberger do stories on consumer complaints. The station had received an e-mail from a Frankfort woman saying she had a bad customer experience with Simon Furniture, Foky said.
