Fairfield Inn fire remains under investigation

By CHARLES PEARL State Journal Staff Writer Published:

Investigators haven't determined the cause of the Dec. 3 fire at Fairfield Inn & Suites off Versailles Road. The $6 million three-story, 90-unit inn, well under construction and adjacent to the Best Western Inn on Chenault Road, was destroyed by fire.

The cause of the fire is undetermined, according to a fire investigative report by Rob Goodwin, a deputy state fire marshal investigator. However, the fire remains under investigation by other agencies, the report said.

The fire's point of origin was the second floor where the north/south and east/west corridors intersect, Goodwin's report said.

Detective Danny Stivers, Kentucky State Police arson investigator, said, "Right now, it appears to be an accidental fire but it's still under investigation. We have a pretty good idea where it started but we can't pinpoint the actual cause."

Construction began July 27 on the Fairfield Inn, a part of the Marriott chain, and the owners were hoping to be open by March 2003. The Fairfield and 99-unit Best Western, built in 1986, are owned by the Max and Lee Allen families of Frankfort.
