Merger petition drive set

By CHARLES PEARL State Journal Staff Writer Published:

The Urge to Merge group will officially begin its petition drive - to initiate a voter referendum - at noon Feb. 14 in the Kentucky History Center.

The wording on the draft petition says, "We, the undersigned registered voters in Frankfort and/or Franklin County, hereby petition to let the voters decide on whether to have merged city/county government. In the interest of promoting efficient and economical local government, we request that the Franklin County Fiscal Court and the Frankfort City Commission jointly appoint a Merger Commission in accordance with the Charter County Government Statute (KRS 67.830) charged with the following:

"1. Study the question of merging Frankfort and Franklin County governments; and

"2. Draft a plan for a Charter County (merged) form of local government; and

"3. Place the merger question on the ballot for a voter decision in November 2004."

Urge to Merge organizers need to get signatures equal to 20 percent of registered voters who voted in the last general election, or approximately 4,000.
