Candy store expansion partly ok'd

Plans to expand a well-known Frankfort business likely will be able to move forward, with the local planning commission on Wednesday recommending a zone change for the property.

Rebecca-Ruth Candies, a historic candy business in South Frankfort, is targeted for expansion over the next five years, according to its owner, Charlie Booe. The Frankfort-Franklin County Planning Commission voted 5-3 for a zone change - a variation of Booe's original zone change request - which will allow commercial development on Booe's property.

Commissioners Lee Waterfield, Ann Metcalfe and Sherron Jackson voted against the zone change (Commissioners Forrest Banta, Charlene Wylie and Robert Mason were absent from the meeting).

Rebecca-Ruth currently is located at 112 and 114 E. Second St. where a gift-shop is housed and candy is made. But Booe would like to expand his business, adding a reception area and possible cafe next door, some specialty shops and a possible restaurant on down the road.

Booe had requested a zone change from "Special Capitol" (SC) to "General Commercial" (CG) for 0.87 acre at East Second and Logan streets (116, 122, 124, 126 E. Second St. and 132 and 134 Logan St.) .
