Schools closed by snow

By CHARLES PEARL State Journal Staff Writer Published:

An inch of snow and freezing temperatures, dropping to 7 degrees early this morning, closed all public and private schools in Franklin County and Frankfort. Kentucky State University was on a two-hour delay.

There were seven noninjury accidents reported in the city Wednesday night and this morning, according to Steve Clark, spokesman for the Frankfort Police Department.

Between 5 p.m. and midnight Wednesday, two injury accidents and two noninjury accidents were reported to the state police, according to the dispatcher log.

Butch Hughes, executive director of the Coalition of Committed Christians shelter and soup kitchen on Second Street, said the cold weather brought two men into the shelter Wednesday night.

"One elderly man came in because his furnace went out at home and he didn't have any heat," Hughes said. "The other man showed up around 9 p.m. Then we had eight regulars here."
