An American Red Cross disaster relief shelter has opened at Thornhill Baptist Church, 1142 Holmes St., for those without power and no place to stay.
Paula Rutledge, executive director of the Red Cross Franklin County Chapter, said people should bring sleeping bags, blankets and pillows and personal toiletries and medications.
"We definitely had a need to open the shelter," said Kay Blackburn, business manager at the Red Cross office on Washington Street. "Some people didn't have anywhere else to go. Our phone stayed busy all day Tuesday."
Many of the callers were families without power at their homes, who had been staying at local hotels and motels, Blackburn said. But they were having to leave because rooms were reserved Wednesday, Thursday and Friday largely due to people throughout the state coming to the boys' state high school wrestling tournament at the Frankfort Civic Center.
Marc Stone, general manager of the Best Western Inn and chairman of the Frankfort/Franklin County Tourist and Convention Commission, said motel rooms are full.
