Nineteen architectural firms have submitted their qualifications to the Paul Sawyier Public Library Board to be considered in designing the new library building on Wapping Street.
A committee - composed of Library Executive Director Donna Gibson and board members Mike Fields, Nick Petit, Mark Overstreet and Becky Childers - will review the 19 proposals and narrow the field to no more than five to present to the entire board for consideration.
In Tuesday's regular monthly meeting, the library board unanimously approved a memorandum of agreement with the city regarding the library building and adjacent city parking lot swap.
The agreement says an environmental investigation will be done, and if contamination is revealed the purchasing party can void its obligation to buy and sell the properties.
Geotechnical testing will also be done to make sure the soil and underlying geologic structures are suitable for a library to be built on the parking lot.
