City police aid Lexington in murder probe

By FRED LUCAS State Journal Staff Writer Published:

A shooting investigation in Lexington, with the suspect possibly a Frankfort resident, became a murder investigation after the victim died Thursday.

David E. Wheeler, 27, died at the University of Kentucky Medical Center Thursday. He was taken there Wednesday after a single gun shot to the head outside the Continental Square Apartments in Lexington.

Witnesses at the scene said they saw a gold Lincoln Continental fleeing the scene.

"That's what led us to Frankfort," said Lt. James Curless of the Lexington Police Department. "That's the only Frankfort connection."

Curless said the vehicle has been identified, but would not release the name of the individual believed to be driving it. He also wouldn't say what type of weapon was used, other than to say it was a handgun.

Curless said Lexington Police are cooperating with the Frankfort Police Department. Frankfort Police spokesman Steve Clark confirmed that local police are assisting in the investigation but declined to say any more.
