The state is asking boat owners using the Old Lawrenceburg Road boat yard to remove their property so the area can be cleaned up. But state officials plan to reopen for boats once the sprucing up is complete.
The Kentucky Finance and Administration Cabinet took full control of the boat yard last month with about 20 boats located there. The deadline for removing property will be at the close of the business day on April 17.
"We are going to work to keep the space available for people to keep their boats there," said Glenn Mitchell, deputy secretary of the Finance and Administration Cabinet, who said people can return boats once the cleanup is complete in May. "It will continue as a boat dock."
He said many of the boats and other pieces of property are abandoned. "Most boats will go back in. We just want to get rid of unsightly boats."
Property not claimed by that date will be confiscated by the state, Mitchell said, and sold as surplus.
