Wall to pay fine over dispute with TV crew

By GAYLE COULTER State Journal Staff Writer Published:

A local furniture store owner accused of illegally detaining a Lexington TV reporter and cameraman entered a plea agreement Tuesday in Franklin District Court.

Simon Furniture store owner Joe Wall entered an Alford plea to claims by a WTVQ-36 "On Your Side Watchdog" crew that it was unlawfully imprisoned and threatened by Wall and store manager Ali Shah over a consumer report the station was doing last September.

Wall, owner of Simon Furniture, was charged with menacing and criminal mischief and unlawful imprisonment.

Wall's attorney, Donald M. Heavrin of Louisville, said he advised Wall to arrange a plea bargain in the case. Wall declined to comment.

"We entered an Alford plea which means that Joe is not admitting he did anything wrong," Heavrin said. "Sometimes it's easier to get cases behind you without contesting them and that's what he elected to do pursuant to my advice."
