Lakeview course closed pending county takeover

By CHARLES PEARL State Journal Staff Writer Published:

The Masters is over. Easter is over. April is almost over and Lakeview Springs Golf Course is still closed.

The nine-hole, par-3 golf course in the county Lakeview Park needs a manager and some part-time employees, some lawn and greens care, some maintenance equipment, and mostly some money.

Franklin Fiscal Court and Park Director Charlie Lewis spent more than an hour talking about golf course problems in a budget planning session earlier this week. Lewis is hoping to get the driving range open by May 15, and the golf course open before July.

After the budget session, Judge-Executive Teresa Barton said the county is looking at budgeting $100,000 in revenues and $100,000 in expenses for the golf course, but those numbers could change.

Since November 1999, Fiscal Court has had a lease agreement with Denny Nash to manage the golf course. He paid the county $3,000 a month for eight months a year. But the county hasn't received its payments for November 2002 or April 2003 and doesn't expect to.
