Judge-executive to submit draft budget to magistrates Tuesday

By CHARLES PEARL State Journal Staff Writer Published:

Judge-Executive Teresa Barton will present the 2003-04 fiscal year draft budget to Franklin Fiscal Court in a 5 p.m. special meeting Tuesday.

After Thursday's fourth planning session, Barton said the new budget will probably be in the $17 million range. The budget for the current fiscal year, which ends June 30, was $16,473,229.

Although numbers can change, Barton said, she hopes to include a 3 percent salary increase to county employees except for jail employees. Each year, one department gets an equity adjustment and the goal is to give jail employees a 3.5 percent salary increase this year, she said.

A proposed 3 percent salary increase is the same as the previous budget in which the sheriff's department employees got the 3.5 percent increase for the equity adjustment.

Last year Barton said the 2002-03 budget was the toughest in her four-year tenure as judge-executive, "and this one is very similar in nature. You always have to prioritize."
