Local Democrats getting over ad that seemed anti-Frankfort

By GAYLE COULTER State Journal Staff Writer Published:

Bruce Lunsford's efforts at damage control following an earlier campaign ad some viewed as negative towards Frankfort appeared successful Wednesday at his campaign stop at the Carter House in Lakeview Park.

A brochure the Democratic gubernatorial candidate's campaign mailed to several hundred thousand Kentucky residents showed three green aliens in a spaceship portrayed on the cover pointing at a map marked with a star below "Frankfort." One alien held a clipboard with "Frankfort" crossed out.

The phrase with the ad viewed as offensive by some said: "They came to the Capitol looking for signs of intelligent life. They went home."

Some said the implication was Frankfort has no intelligent life.

Franklin County Judge-Executive Teresa Barton said in an earlier interview about the mailer that she noticed the error in phrasing when she received a copy of the advertisement in the mail.

Barton said then she was somewhat concerned by the way the message was phrased because "it gives the appearance that those in Frankfort are lacking in intelligence."
