Representatives from the local landfill are still pushing for a zone change that would pave the way for what they say is a much needed expansion of the county dump.
But residents of the Huntington Woods Subdivision, which is near the Browning-Ferris Industries landfill in western Franklin County, remain opposed.
A public hearing on the zone change was held Thursday before the Frankfort-Franklin County Planning Commission. BFI is seeking to rezone 211 acres from "RR" (Rural Residential) and "CH" (Highway Commercial) to "EZ-L" (exclusive use zone for landfills).
"This is the only logical place in the county for the expansion," BFI's environmental attorney Dennis Conniff said following the meeting. "Hopefully, the planning commission will take that into consideration and agree."
Currently, BFI has applied for a zone change with the Frankfort-Franklin County Planning Commission for property north of the county's existing landfill and closer to the subdivision. The expansion would border Highway 151 to the east, Interstate 64 to the north and Benson Creek to the west.
