War baby brightens mom's day

By GAYLE COULTER State Journal Staff Writer Published:

Today is Traci Smith-Dixon's first official Mother's Day.

Her 8-week-old son, Jack Thomas Dixon, will have to handle the celebration for Mom alone this year since his dad, Jon Dixon, is still in Iraq.

Dixon was deployed with the 130th Airlift Squadron just six days before Jack's birth. He is a major with the West Virginia Air National Guard, so Smith-Dixon said she knew he might end up being called to duty but they were still unprepared for it to happen when it did.

He received his orders March 1 and was shipped out March 10 knowing the birth of his first child was just a week or so away, she said.

Baby Jack has kept her so busy that she hasn't had as much time to worry about all the dangers her husband has faced in Iraq as she might have otherwise.

"I just can't believe he's mine," she said. "God must have known what he was doing. We weren't trying to get pregnant but if we hadn't, I'd be sitting here going crazy by myself."
