Kamp Kessa will expand its horizons this summer with construction of a new residential treatment facility for adolescent girls and a school for children with unique learning needs.
The camp opened three years ago on the Franklin County-Shelby County line. Anthony and Thelca Helmbrecht Howard said they created Kamp Kessa to help children focus on positive qualities within themselves in a special community setting. Many of the children who have visited Kamp Kessa have special needs.
Thelca Helmbrecht has a doctorate in education and was a branch manager for the Department of Juvenile Justice and her husband Anthony Howard was a school psychologist before they decided to leave their jobs to open Kamp Kessa.
The couple received a HUD grant for $126,000 through the Kentucky Regional Planning and Development Agency (KIPDA).
"We have to match that, so the total building project is twice that," Helmbrecht said. "We're seeking other fund-raisers and grants."
