Cancer survivors join others here in Relay for Life

By MARY BRANHAM State Journal News Editor Published:

Lillianne Nelson had never walked in the Relay for Life before Friday.

But the 5-year-old daughter of Elkhorn Middle School teacher Rebekah Nelson had a lot of support. About 60 sixth-grade girls walked for a while at the event at Franklin County High School in support of Lilli.

And she got to join Joshua Hartman, 11, the honorary co-chairman of the event, to lead off the survivor's lap at 7 p.m.

Lilli was diagnosed with ALL, or acute lymphoblastic leukemia, when she was 21 months old, her mother said. She ended her treatment in January, 2002.

Treatment of the type of leukemia Lilli was diagnosed with is really successful, Nelson said.
