State Democrats exhorted to unite

Amid a backdrop of an American flag and red and white balloons, Ben Chandler vowed he'd win the race for governor through a back-to-basics grassroots campaign.

Chandler faces Republican Ernie Fletcher, a three-term U.S. Congressman, who's running on the promise to "bring change to Frankfort."

An estimated 200 people gathered Wednesday at the state Democratic headquarters in East Frankfort for a traditional unity rally to begin the campaign for November's general election.

Candidates, including Frankfort native and state auditor hopeful Crit Luallen, said they'd have to work "remind" the public of the ideals of the Democratic party, promoting it as the party of the working class.

"I think, at times, people tend to forget what built the party," Luallen said following the political rally.
