With unmistakable short red hair and an effervescent personality to match, Lynsey Ward is a 16-year-old swimmer, golfer, bowler, comedian, "seafood lover" and world-class Special Olympics athlete.

After winning a bronze medal for freestyle swimming and a silver for a relay at the state games held in Richmond May 31 to June 1, she will represent the United States as a golfer in Dublin, Ireland, in the World Olympic Games June 20-29.

"I'm very excited about this," she said. "I've never been out of the country before."

Mickey Ward, Lynsey's father, found out about her selection for the world program and called her to share the good news.

"I had almost cried," she said.

Her dad was equally thrilled. "We're just ecstatic that she has the opportunity to go to the World Games. It's an honor for her to represent Kentucky and the United States."
