Carroll up for state Senate seat

After a long absence from public service, former Gov. Julian Carroll says he'll run for the state Senate in 2004.

Carroll, reached by telephone Friday at his Franklin County home, confirmed he's been considering running for office since the state legislature re-drew Senate districts in early 2002. Currently, the 7th District, Franklin, Woodford, Anderson and part of Fayette Counties, is represented in the Senate by Lindy Casebier, R-Louisville.

Casebier has announced he will not seek re-election in 2004.

As of last week, state Board of Elections statistics showed Franklin County had 32,625 registered voters. Of those, 25,978 were Democrats and 5,125 were Republicans.

Carroll, a Democrat, said a need for Democratic representation here and an overall need for change in state government prompted him to run.
