Korean War veterans from around the state gathered here Friday to commemorate the 50th anniversary of what's often called the "Forgotten War."

Veterans, family members, state officials and others filed into Bradford Hall Auditorium at Kentucky State University. Prominent veterans spoke and took part in a narrative on the war.

Panelists included Medal of Honor recipient Ernie West, retired Col. Arthur Kelly, Jack Browning, Suchoon Mo, Ph.D., Maj. Gen. Phil Ardery, Ed Ford, retired Col. Ed Milburn and retired Col. Ralph Palmore.

In addition, the state's Adjutant Gen. D. Allen Youngman awarded veterans with the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.

"We hope that the generation that follows will appreciate the sacrifices of that war," said Brig. Gen. Les Beavers, commissioner of the Kentucky Department of Veterans Affairs.
