YMCA board isn't alone in appealing for funds

The YMCA is only one of many local organizations looking to raise money for a community project. Save the Grand Theatre, Inc., has been working for the past two years to raise $7 million to renovate the Grand Theatre into a performing arts venue and gallery.

"We've had a lot of support and encouragement from the community," said Mike Greer with Save the Grand, "which is why we're so optimistic about raising the money."

The group has received several grants, held fund-raisers and plans to lobby the private sector for endowment funds.

Rick Pogrotsky, executive director of United Way, has a different outlook. "We have not been able to raise sufficient funds to meet all the needs of the agencies," he said.

United Way holds an annual campaign, including fund-raisers and workplace presentations, to support 23 area organizations, including the Red Cross, the Senior Citizens Center, Thorn Hill Learning Center and the Salvation Army. Some of these organizations host fundraising campaigns on their own as well.
