Gary Muller, Frankfort's interim city manager, said more than 50 people have already applied for the manager position, according to a consulting group handling the recruiting process for the city.
City commissioners will meet in a closed session Aug. 28 to discuss applicants as well as the procedure they will use to select the best candidates from the pool of applicants, Muller said.
Muller said he's not certain what commissioners plan to do but expects they will opt to do a financial as well as the typical criminal records background search and reference check.
"I would anticipate they would ask to do a full background check with what's going in the news with the college presidents right now," Muller said. "I think they probably will because it's prudent and part of the process."
The goal for the Aug. 28 meeting is to discuss applicants, interview dates and process options for the remainder of the search, Muller said.
The Mercer Group of Atlanta is helping the city conduct its search at a cost of $12,500 and as much as $7,500 in expenses.
Muller has been serving as interim city manager since the City Commission voted in April to fire former City Manager Bob Elliott after he served a mere seven months in the job.
