Second Street middle school students will soon find bows and arrows in their hands, after the Frankfort Independent Board of Education approved the On Target Archery program Thursday night in a special meeting.

Second Street will be the first school in Frankfort and Franklin County to adopt this program, Second Street sixth grade math teacher Lisa Frye said. Last year's pilot program had 22 Kentucky schools participating in it, she said.

She said this is a collaborative program with the Kentucky Department of Education, Fish and Wildlife and the National Archery Association.

"The program is designed to teach Olympic-style target archery," she said.

According to the National Archery in the Schools program's Web site (, the program focuses on safety, technique, archery history, equipment, self-improvement and mental concentration.
