Virus spoils cruise even though local couple stay well

So much for that trip to Greenland.

Frankfort residents John and Betty Loyd have had the North Atlantic country on their "To Do" list for a while now. John Loyd said their desire to visit the nation was prompted by an earlier trek to Iceland, so the frequent travelers put it on their list of places they'd like to visit.

It's still there.

The couple booked a cruise, which set sail Aug. 18 from Copenhagen, Denmark - the same cruise that made headlines last week after returning home a day early when over 300 of its passengers were stricken with the Norwalk virus. Norwalk, a highly contagious illness, marked by vomiting, diarrhea, nausea and fever, was the same highly publicized virus that affected cruise ships last fall.

"One of the big reasons I went was to go to Greenland," said Loyd, who said he's fascinated by the country's history, climate and unique geothermal heating system which warms homes by tapping into heated groundwater. "I would have liked to have seen what Greenland was like, but we didn't get to do that. That'll have to be another trip."
