Y pitches its building for library

The city finally bought the historic library building. The library board finally bought the Wapping Street parking lot from the city for a new library site. The third draft of an architect's report estimates the total project costs for a new 39,200 square-foot library to be $6,099,149.

And now YMCA treasurer Bill Stroupe wants to know if the Paul Sawyier Public Library Board would be interested in purchasing the YMCA building on Broadway for its new library. That's the message library board member Mark Overstreet passed along to other board members at Tuesday's regular meeting.

Overstreet, a non-voting member of the board, said he received a phone call from Stroupe about 10 days ago. Overstreet said he's not an advocate "one way or the other, but 41,000 square feet sounds really interesting. If we could get 25, 30 or 50 percent more building for the same dollars, I think we owe it to our staff and the public to at least look at it. I don't have a clue as to whether it would work. I'm just presenting it strictly as information."

He said he didn't know what the purchase price for the YMCA building would be, but would try to find out if the board is interested.
