City finishes appointments to board for merger study

The City Commission voted 4-1 Friday to accept the names of 15 area residents including the mayor appointed to serve on the Frankfort/ Franklin County Merger Study Commission.

Commissioners had agreed to appoint three names each at Monday's meeting and named 12 but Mayor Bill May said his names were taken by other commissioners, so a special meeting was called Friday to enable May to have time to come up with additional names.

By Friday, Commissioner Bob Roach had time to think about the names given at Monday's meeting and said he had to vote no on approving them because he perceived an imbalance in the list.

"I think we have some very good people on this list," Roach said. "But we have two problems with our list. Over 25 percent of our appointments are from the fire department who are either presently working or retired. I really think that's an imbalance. Plus, we have selected someone who lives in the county."

Commissioner Tracey Turner Thurman said it was "the eleventh hour" in the selection process given that the names were due by Sept. 20 and that Roach should have brought his concerns to the table at Monday night's meeting.
