Get moving! It's time to take on diabetes.
The Franklin County Diabetes Coalition, formed last year to raise awareness of the problem locally, is holding a Diabetes Carnival from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Farnham Dudgeon Civic Center.
"We want to get the word out that it is a problem in Franklin County," said Debbie Bell, a registered dietitian with the Franklin County Health Department.
The problem is prevalent across Kentucky. The state is tied for 18th in the nation in the number of its citizens with diabetes. Kentucky has nearly 303,000 adults with diabetes. Across the United States, 17 million Americans suffer from the condition, and 5.9 million don't even know it.
Statistics like these prompted a group of local citizens to form the Franklin County Diabetes Coalition, according to Bell.
"We decided what would be best for our community is to get the word out about diabetes," Bell said, "to kick off our year and do something about diabetes awareness.
