Owingsville man hit, killed by truck here

State Journal Staff Report Published:

An Owingsville man was killed Thursday when he was hit by a truck on Wilkinson Boulevard near Jim's Seafood.

Claude M. Copher, 37, had stopped his 1991 GMC Sierra pickup in the right lane and was apparently retrieving something in the roadway and putting it back in his truck when according to a Frankfort Police report, he was hit by a 1998 GMC Sierra pickup driven by James E. Smith, 45, of Frankfort.

According to the police report, Smith was driving between 40 and 50 miles an hour and did not see Copher in time to avoid hitting him. The accident occurred at 10:03 a.m. and there was evidence Smith tried to brake, police said.

Copher was taken to Frankfort Regional Medical Center where he was pronounced dead from multiple injuries.

Police said they are investigating the accident but no alcohol involvement is suspected.
