Candidates woo local voters

By BETH CRACE State Journal Staff Writer Published:

Two gubernatorial candidates who've spent the better part of year campaigning to clean up Frankfort on Saturday praised the city and made promises for improvements.

Republican Ernie Fletcher, a U.S. congressman from Lexington, said he would like to see improvements to local airport and cheaper health insurance for state employees.

"And I think we need a Cracker Barrel here too," said a fired-up Fletcher.

Taking a cue from local residents who've said they're tired of Frankfort bashing, Democrat Ben Chandler, the state attorney general, cast a shot at Fletcher's place of work.

"They talk about the mess in Frankfort," said Chandler. "I don't think this city's a mess. The last time I checked there was a mess in Washington."
