Holmes Street task force has first meeting

By GAYLE COULTER State Journal Staff Writer Published:

The mere mention of Holmes Street brings a lot of issues to the minds of both residents and city officials.

Flooding, drainage, sewers, housing standards, state plans to build a new road, and how best to consider the needs and interests of everyone involved have all been identified as priorities by members of the newly formed Holmes Street Task Force Committee.

The committee, whose members were appointed by the City Commission at the September meeting, met for the first time Thursday night to discuss what they hope to accomplish and how to do it by Feb. 6, 2004, when it is slated to report findings to the commission.

The state plans to build a new road through Holmes Street within the next six years, but the path that new road will take has yet to be determined.

No one knows if the new road will involve three lanes, four lanes, or bringing two lanes in from the East Main Street hill.
