Holmes Street work may be 10 years away

A new road for the Holmes Street area appears to be a long way off.

A Transportation official told members of the city's Holmes Street Task Force Committee at its Thursday night meeting that it could be as long as 10 years before a new road is built for Holmes Street.

"From idea to pavement, it takes seven to 10 years to build a road," said Lynn J. Soporowski, a transportation engineering branch manager with the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet. "There are no projects in the present six-year plan for Holmes Street."

Some members of the committee expressed surprise that the Transportation Cabinet didn't have Holmes Street placed at a higher priority level given that it received a rating of "F" in a 1998 study.

"You're telling us that Holmes Street can handle the capacity through 2007 when another study said it was rated an 'F' ?" asked Eric Burke, a member of the committee and also with the Holmes Street Neighbors Association.
