As the governor's race heads down to the wire, some prominent Democrats are making a last-minute appeal to attract voters in Franklin County.
Former U.S. Sen. Wendell Ford, state Sen. Daniel Mongiardo, Sheriff Ted Collins and Donna Hecker will appear in an advertised segment on leased access channel 20 in support of Democratic nominee Ben Chandler. The ad, which lasts 16 minutes and will air five times, targets Republican Ernie Fletcher in attempt to persuade local voters, particularly state employees.
"We were concerned the message wasn't getting out there because of all the noise created by the negative ads," said Mongiardo, a Hazard Democrat. "We just wanted to make people in Franklin County know the truth. Ernie Fletcher's promising to do a lot of things that seem to be on the backs of state workers."
Mongiardo and Ford questioned Fletcher initiatives such a increasing teacher salaries and attracting a NASCAR race to the Kentucky Speedway in Sparta. They said such promises in light of huge deficits in Medicaid and the state general fund were impossible without some sort of cuts.
"What it sounds like is he's going to privatize government and get rid of state government jobs," said Ford. "Privatization seems to be a thing with Republicans to give contracts to their friends and reduce employees in state government."
