Bennett's career on the line

Basketball coach Winston Bennett came to Kentucky State University with much fanfare three years ago, but he could be leaving amid allegations of assaulting a player.

Ricky Green, a senior guard from Louisville, has filed a criminal complaint with the Franklin County attorney's office alleging Bennett physically assaulted him during an early morning practice. According to the complaint, Bennett repeatedly struck Green in the face, causing his nose to bleed, and then tore his shirt.

"I was sad, of course," said Athletic Director Derrick Ramsey, who made the decision to suspend Bennett pending an investigation. "I felt like it was the right decision."

The reported assault, which was corroborated by Bennett as well as other members on the basketball team who were eyewitnesses, took place around 6 a.m. Thursday, Ramsey said. The complaint was filed Thursday afternoon.

In a hand-written complaint obtained by The State Journal from County Attorney James Boyd, Green described the event which he alleged prompted the assault by Bennett.
