KSU fires basketball coach

Following a review by school administrators and its athletic director, Kentucky State University basketball coach Winston Bennett has been fired for assaulting a player during a team practice.

KSU Athletic Director Derrick Ramsey said Thursday university administrators decided to terminate Bennett's employment following an investigation of a reported assault. Bennett is accused of hitting senior guard Ricky Green, who filed a criminal complaint against Bennett last Thursday.

"The evidence I found during the investigation was complete enough to make the decision," said Ramsey. "Of course, the president has the final say so, but it was my recommendation."

A predetermination hearing was held mid-morning Thursday in order for Bennett to give his side of the story, Ramsey said. According to a report Green filed with Franklin County Attorney Jim Boyd, Bennett struck Green in the face, bloodied his nose and tore his shirt, after Green had hit another player in the head with a basketball.

Ramsey said Bennett's account was consistent with what other players on the team had reported.
