Local school reinforces aid to at-risk kids

In October, the Wilkinson Street School Day Treatment Program joined America's Promise to continue endeavors to help students be successful.

America's Promise is a part of the AmeriCorps Program at Eastern Kentucky University in collaboration with the Kentucky Educational Collaborative for State Agency Children (KECSAC).

The effort was stablished in 1997 by the President's Summit for America's Future, including Secretary of State General Colin Powell and former presidents Bill Clinton, George Bush, Jimmy Carter and Gerald Ford along with Nancy Reagan representing her husband, Ronald Reagan. They came up with the program as a way to benefit the nation's at-risk students.

AmeriCorps/KECSAC Promise Fellow Charles L. Childers said, "The mission of America's Promise is to provide five basic promises to every child in America."
