After heading the sports department for more than four years, Kentucky State University Athletic Director Derrick Ramsey has accepted an appointment in state government.
KSU Interim President William Turner said today he will appoint an assistant to replace Ramsey, named Tuesday as deputy secretary in the Commerce Cabinet by Gov. Ernie Fletcher. Curtis Campbell, KSU's assistant athletic director, will replace Ramsey, Turner said.
"It's a setback for the university," said Turner. "But it's also another opportunity for Derrick."
Turner said he learned in late December Ramsey was leaving the university. But when contacted by The State Journal earlier, Ramsey initially denied he had accepted a position in Fletcher's cabinet.
Ramsey could not be reached for comment. He will make about $95,000 per year in his new job.
The Commerce Cabinet, newly consolidated under Fletcher's reorganization plan, now encompasses tourism, economic development and arts and humanities. Ramsey will be working under cabinet secretary Jim Host, a Lexington businessman.
