The Frankfort-Franklin County Merger Commission plans to have at least four forums during February to hear public opinions and concerns before the commission becomes "too deeply involved in drafting" its proposed charter.
One of the forums will be at Kentucky State University and three will be at Franklin County elementary schools, according to commission member Laura Shelton Goins, chairwoman of the Community Relations and Public Forums Committee. The committee is hoping to have one in the eastern part of the county, one in the Cardwell Lane area, and one in the Bald Knob area.
The places, dates and times of the forums will be announced soon.
The merger commission will also have public hearings on the final draft of the charter in June and July. Then informational forums on the proposed charter will be held between August and the end of October.
The proposed charter will be on the election ballot in November for the public to decide whether it wants to merge city and county governments.
