Mayor challenged; Roach out, others in

A challenger has filed to contest Mayor Bill May's bid for a third term while a 12-term member of the City Commission has decided not to run again.

Douglas Kevin Williams, of First Avenue, filed papers Friday to run for mayor but has not made a formal announcement. One other person picked up papers Friday to file for the mayoral election but has not yet done so. May announced his candidacy last week.

Bob Roach, in his 25th year as city commissioner, told The State Journal Friday he is ready to quit.

"I am not running again," he said. "My family has not wanted me to run for the past several times, particularly my wife. She has a great desire to spend the cold months in Florida. That is one factor why I'm choosing not to run again. There are others which I may choose to make public at a later date."

Roach said he was not yet ready to endorse a candidate for City Commission.
