Airport eager for upgrading

There seems to be little disagreement at the Capital City Airport with Gov. Ernie Fletcher's assessment of it as an "embarrassment" to Frankfort.

An extended runway with repaved and reinforced concrete, 30 new hangars and a new security fence are among the improvements needed to pull away from the governor's description, said Dean Stoops, owner of Eagle Wings Air, a flight school and plane rental center at the airport.

"The structures here are old and haven't been improved upon in years," Stoops said. "For this to be the capital city airport and it not to have new facilities is an embarrassment. I think the governor is right on target there."

Fletcher made his comments at a transportation conference last week with the subtext that his proposed budget includes $2.39 million in state funds for improvements to the airport and $2.77 million in matching federal funds.
