Christian athletes reach out to the community

Playing championship basketball won't be the only product of the National Christian College Athletic Association basketball tournaments in Frankfort this week and next.

Players from eight women's basketball teams were out in Frankfort Wednesday performing community service, playing and working with children at area churches and community centers.

"The idea is to put them (the players) in some kind of service mode during the tournament," said Dan Wood, executive director of the NCCAA.

The women's Division I national tournament began Thursday and continues through Saturday. The men's Division I games begin March 18 and will be over March 20. Both tournaments will be at the Farnham Dudgeon Civic Center.

The men's teams will also engage in similar community service projects, Wood said.
