Frankfort native Michael A. Fields, a deputy commissioner of the state Department for Community Based Services since December 2002, was named undersecretary for human resources in the Cabinet for Health and Family Services (CHFS) Friday.

Gov. Ernie Fletcher, in introducing Fields at a press conference, said the Cabinet for Health and Family Services is one of the most critical areas of state government.

"The decisions and plans that come out of this cabinet will affect every family in Kentucky," Fletcher said. "Because of this I've selected leaders within the cabinet with great care and consideration."

Fletcher said Fields "will provide a great deal of experience, along with compassion and leadership to the services that are crucial to the well-being of all Kentuckians....I'm confident his depth of experience in public service makes him an ideal choice to lead so many diverse agencies."

Fields thanked the governor and Dr. James W. Holsinger Jr., the cabinet secretary, for giving him an opportunity to continue to serve the people of the state.
