Instead of getting down about a slow economy, the family at Lyons Lumber Co. decided to take advantage of an emptier store to complete a full-blown remodeling.
“As the economy improves, we’ll be ready,” said Lyons President Gregg Stevenson. “We’re more of a complete package and can take care of anything a contractor or individual homeowner would need.”
They started the process nearly a year ago, and after a few finishing touches this weekend, today is the first day of their grand reopening, which lasts all week.
Each day, they’re serving free lunch to customers and have several product demonstrations lined up.
“We want people to walk through and see everything we’ve done,” said Vice President Scott Stevenson.
They’ve remodeled every section and expanded several, including power tools, hand tools, fasteners, plumbing and electric. They added a window and door display in the back of the store and completely redid the front, adding new counters and a flatscreen TV.
The store’s look is totally new too – with an antique twist that includes wall displays with old photos of the 103-year-old family-owned Frankfort business. Brothers Gregg and Scott Stevenson are proud of their family heritage and commitment to the community. They wanted the look to reflect that.
“We’re family owned and operated; our employees are family, well not true family, but we treat them like family,” Gregg Stevenson said. “All our employees have been here a long time, added up it’s hundreds of years of service.”
He and Scott Stevenson have each worked at Lyons for 28 years – they both started “at the bottom,” sweeping floors and running errands.
By now, the Stevensons and most of the staff know customers on a first-name basis.
Don Weber, who has worked for Lyons for 13 years, says he’s enjoyed watching customers react to the changes.
The staff of 14 has done a majority of the work, and Weber’s glad it’s finally finished.
“You know, even the contractors who get frustrated when we move things around have liked the changes, so I think we’ve done something right,” he said.
Even employees’ uniforms got a remodeling – their bright red polos brag “Problem solver” and “We’ve got answers.”
“That’s kind of our motto,” Scott Stevenson said, “We’ve got the expertise to give you the answer to any problem you might have.”
