11,000 books head to storm-damaged schools

(AP) — Schools that lost their libraries in a tornado outbreak that devastated parts of eastern Kentucky in March have gotten more than 11,000 books donated to them.

First lady Jane Beshear announced the contributions on Monday during a stop in West Liberty, one of the hardest hit cities.

Children’s book publishing giant Scholastic donated 1,000 of the books. The others came from other Kentucky schools, libraries and state employees.

Beshear said additional book donations are welcome.

Collection bins have been set up in several locations in Frankfort, including just outside the governor’s office in the Capitol and in the lobbies of the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet headquarters and the Department of Libraries and Archives.

Beshear said some schools that weren’t damaged by tornadoes will continue collecting books through the end of May.
