Man airlifted Saturday improving

State Journal Staff Report Published:

A man’s condition improved from serious to stable this weekend after his vehicle hit a tree head-on Saturday.

Gary Edwards, 32, of Norwich, Conn., hit a tree head-on off Interstate 64 Saturday after trying to avoid a merging vehicle.

A nurse at University of Kentucky Chandler Hospital, where Edwards is currently a patient, said this morning that he is listed in stable condition.

Edwards was originally listed in serious condition after he “lost a lot of blood” from the accident, Deputy Russ Persons of the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office told The State Journal shortly after the crash Saturday evening.

Edwards was flown to UK Chandler Hospital, and the westbound lanes of I-64 near the Kentucky Highway 151 ramp were shut down for about 45 minutes as emergency officials worked to extricate Edwards and passenger Katie Soer, 27, of Louisville, from the vehicle.

Soer was taken to Frankfort Regional Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.
